One of the challenges that we always face in our family is where we all are with our weight loss journeys. My wife and I have been at different points in our journey more often than not – sometimes I am ready to lose weight, and sometimes she is. Over the years we’ve really had to work through how best to approach these challenges. We didn’t always get it right. So what have we learned about how to work through our weight loss together?
- Communication is Key
Letting your spouse know what you’re doing is the first step in making sure that you’re getting support, whether you’re doing this alone or together. Let them know what plan you’re following and how they can support you. Make sure they know how important this is to you.
- Support One Another
Whether it’s the first time or the tenth time you’ve decided to lose weight, it’s important to support your spouse. Weight loss is rarely a success only journey. Even if you’ve tried and gained the weight back, or gave up on day 2 in the past, this time may be the time that it works and you succeed. And supporting your spouse improves the probability of success.
- Do it Together
Everyone following the same plan is even better than supporting your spouse in word only. There is nothing worse than eating a pizza in front of your spouse who is eating a salad while they drool over your pizza. Or having cookies, chocolate, or ice cream in the cupboards readily available for when your spouse has a weak moment, undermining their best efforts.
